Please plan
on arriving for this clinic 15 minutes prior to the start time.
Jim Dexter, SPCC General Manager (aka "Dex") will be the lead
instructor for this clinic, but will be assisted by other certified
instructors and club members who have volunteered to help out. You
will be given instruction on the fundamentals of the game, some basic
rules, and then will go out on the ice and learn how to deliver and
sweep a rock!
Before
arriving at the SPCC, please dress appropriately. The
arena area is kept at about 40 degrees F (or 4 C for our Canuck
curlers):
- Bring a
light jacket, or sweater that fits loosely.
- Avoid
wearing jeans or other "stiff" pant material. Sweat-pants, or other
stretchable pants will allow you to deliver a curling rock much more
effectively.
-
Dedicate a pair of CLEAN (preferably NEW) flat-soled tennis shoes for
curling. Do NOT under any circumstances use
hard soled shoes, boots, or other shoes that you normally wear outside.
The smallest grain of sand or dirt brought in from the outside can ruin
a curling ice surface. Specialized "curling shoes" are available for
purchase via the internet, but are not necessary when first starting
out. See the club manager for recommended purchase locations if you are
interested.
- A
"slider" - either "full" or "half shoe" are available for purchase from
the club. See our
Pro Shop
for details. You will need a slider prior to starting league play.
The club will have "duct tape" - which works as a great temporary
substitute - for this clinic date to get you started. Right handed
curlers use a slider on their LEFT foot. Left handed curlers slide on
their RIGHT foot.
- A broom
must be purchased prior to the start of league play (should you decide,
or have decided that you WILL be curling in a league for the upcoming
season). The
Pro Shop
is fully stocked with a variety of brooms. A good broom will last
you many years. For your curling clinic, the club has a good supply of
"loaner brooms" that can be used. You will be instructed on how to
effectively sweep a rock.
-
Finally, a
limited number of "Curling for Dummies" books books
are available at the SPCC. This book is great for both beginners and
more seasoned players alike.
