SPCC members & fellow curlers –
I wanted to take a moment to raise a communal toast to the two newest members of
the Twin Cities curling scene, Edina Curling Club & Dakota Curling Club.
Cheers to you!
I’m sure most of you are aware of plans in Edina to kick off their inaugural
season with 3 nights of curling on Mondays, Tuesdays & Wednesdays – with 3 draws
each night.
Dakota will have 4 nights of curling on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday with
6 leagues spread out over the week. The curling club will be located at the
Dakota County Fairgrounds in Ahlberg Hall.
As you may guess, there is still a ton of work to be done before opening day.
Dakota is looking for volunteers beginning in September. They need help in the
following areas: construction, heating & a/c, ice plant install & maintenance –
and if you’re really good at unskilled labor, they need help there as well.
They’re also looking for general building supplies either donated, used or
at-cost. For more information including volunteer opportunities at either club,
check their websites.
These new developments are long overdue and are
the direct result of hard work and dedication from many individuals. They
recognized a need in the metro area for more curling opportunities and it was
their vision that brought them to where they are today.
I would suggest that if you are not currently a member of a grandfathered team
at St. Paul and have intentions of curling this year, it’s worth a look at Edina
or Dakota. As it has been for the past couple of years, it will be difficult at
best with no grandfather status to break into a new league, due to the club’s
membership being at capacity.
SPCC is fully supportive of Edina and Dakota curling clubs in their efforts to
provide more people a chance to enjoy the roaring game. It is a great step
forward for curling in the Twin Cities. It also may provide some much needed
relief to SPCC with our full membership issues. In the end, it’s all good!
Thank you for your time.
Cheers,
MO
